Mobile windscreen camera calibration · Sheffield, Yorkshire & the Midlands

Windscreen camera calibration after a new screen.

Many cars from the last few years have a camera behind the windscreen, by the mirror. It runs lane assist, traffic sign recognition, auto high beam and often emergency braking. When the screen is replaced, the camera has to be aimed again to the manufacturer's measurements. We do that at your home or work, or in our Sheffield calibration bay.

Do I need it?

If your car has a forward-facing camera behind the screen, almost always. Lane assist, sign recognition and emergency braking all rely on it being aimed correctly. No warning light doesn't mean it's right: a camera that's slightly out often shows no warning. Check your windscreen invoice. If there's no calibration certificate, it probably hasn't been done.

Signs the camera needs calibrating

  • Lane assist not available, or steering you oddly
  • A camera fault or "view restricted" message
  • Road signs read wrongly
  • Auto high beam not working
  • A warning that started after the new screen

Your fitter didn't calibrate it?

Not every fitter has the targets and equipment. We can calibrate after they've fitted, or meet them at the job.

Questions

Windscreen camera questions

Do I need a calibration after a new windscreen?

If your car has a forward-facing camera behind the screen, almost always. Lane assist, sign recognition and emergency braking all rely on it being aimed correctly.

Can I drive before it's calibrated?

The car drives as normal, but the systems that use the camera may not work properly, or may switch off. Don't rely on lane assist or emergency braking until it's done, and book it in soon.

Is calibration a legal requirement?

There's no UK law that names it, but the car maker's repair procedure calls for the camera to be calibrated after a new windscreen, and the industry's repair guidance expects driver-assist systems to be calibrated after work that disturbs them. Your certificate is the proof it's been done.

Will my insurer pay?

If your insurer arranged the screen, ask whether calibration was included. Either way, you get the pre-scan, certificate and post-scan for your records or your claim.

Does the radar need doing too?

It depends on the car. The radar usually sits behind the badge or bumper, not the windscreen. The pre-scan shows what needs calibrating, and you only pay for what the car needs. More about radar calibration
